Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Embers & Iron Grill Grate is a premium open-fire cooking grate engineered from solid 310-grade stainless steel — no coatings, no chrome plating, no shortcuts. It features a Warren Truss reinforced frame (the same structural geometry used in high-strength bridges) that resists sagging, warping, and buckling under intense heat. Designed for chefs, BBQ enthusiasts, and outdoor adventurers who refuse to compromise on their tools.

  • We currently offer two sizes:

    450mm × 300mm (2 kg) — A$150.00 — Our flagship size, ideal for full-size hibachi grills, open-fire setups, and commercial kitchens.

250mm × 200mm — A$70.00 — A compact option for smaller hibachi grills and portable setups. (Currently unavailable.)

  • Yes — it's specifically designed for this. Standard hibachi replacement grates are typically chrome-plated steel that chips, rusts, and warps under repeated heat cycles. Our grate drops in as a direct upgrade: same form factor, built to a completely different standard.

If you use a hibachi regularly, you already know the frustration of a rack that doesn't last. This was built to end that cycle.

  • Absolutely. Our grates are commercially tested through a hands-on R&D process developed alongside real industry partners in demanding open-fire kitchen environments. Many of our early adopters are chefs and hospitality professionals who need equipment that performs shift after shift without degrading.

  • Yes. Every Embers & Iron Grill Grate includes a complimentary 5-year household warranty. If your grate develops a fault that violates our quality guarantee we'll replace it or refund you at no cost, including return shipping.

02 — Materials & Safety

  • 310 SS is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel purpose-built for extreme heat environments.

Max operating temperature: up to 1,200°C in continuous service
Oxidation resistance: forms a stable protective oxide layer under sustained heat
Dimensional stability: low distortion through repeated heating and cooling cycles
Structural integrity: retains strength at temperatures where other alloys fail

Most competing grates use 304 SS (rated to 870°C intermittently) or chrome-plated mild steel — materials that warp, scale, and at open-fire temperatures, chip and contaminate food.

  • No.
The grate is solid 310 stainless steel throughout — no chrome plating, no non-stick coatings, no surface treatments of any kind. This is deliberate: coatings fail under heat, chip into food, and rust from underneath. We eliminated that failure mode entirely.

  • Yes. Because there are no coatings to degrade or chrome layers to chip, there is no contamination risk. 310 SS is an inert, food-safe alloy. At the temperatures used in open-fire and hibachi cooking, the surface stays clean, stable, and safe.

The risk with cheaper racks isn't just rust — it's chrome particles and degraded coating flaking onto your food. Our grate eliminates that entirely.

  • 304 SS is excellent for general use, but it wasn't designed for open fire. Its maximum intermittent service temperature is ~870°C — above that it scales badly and loses structural strength rapidly. It's also more prone to warping through repeated heat cycles.

310 SS was engineered for sustained high-heat applications. It operates safely beyond 1,200°C, maintains its shape through thermal cycling, and doesn't degrade under the same conditions that destroy 304 SS. For open-fire cooking, it's simply the right materia

04 — Care & Maintenance

  • Wash the grate in warm soapy water to remove protective oils from manufacturing, then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

Pro tip: Apply a thin coat of high-smoke-point oil (grapeseed or canola) and heat until it just begins to smoke. Repeat once or twice to build a natural light non-stick barrier on the surface.

  • Clean while the grate is still slightly warm (but safe to handle) using a stainless steel brush or nylon scourer.

Avoid bleach or highly acidic oven cleaners. The grate is technically dishwasher-safe, but we recommend hand washing — harsh salts in dishwasher tablets dull the surface finish over time.

  • 310 SS has exceptional corrosion resistance, but surface marks can appear if the grate is stored while wet or exposed to coastal salt air for extended periods. The rule: never put it away damp.

If you live near the coast, store the grate inside when not in use for long periods. Any discolouration from heat cycling is normal and cosmetic — it does not affect performance or safety.

  • Yes — heat cycling produces natural patina and surface discolouration, often in blue-gold hues. This is entirely normal and does not indicate any structural degradation. Many cooks consider it part of the character of a well-used tool.
